    <title>The Mr. T Of Spinnerbaits</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3887/the-mr-t-of-spinnerbaits</link>
    <description>

With everyone throwing shallow-running square bills, swim jigs and weedless swimbaits, spinnerbaits have become the tackle equivalent of a redheaded stepchild.

Truth is, spinnerbaits are still fantastic search baits&amp;mdash;especially new models that feature a ton of blades. In states where A-Rigs are restricted, they&amp;#39;re an extremely effective substitute.

Like this bad boy. With seven&amp;mdash;we repeat&amp;mdash;seven willow blades. This spinnerbait has more bling than Mr. T. and resembles a school of baitfish like no other clothespin we&amp;#39;ve ever seen.

Only recently introduced this year from Japan to the U.S., this unique spinnerbait is already gaining a lot of street cred. We&amp;#39;ve heard of several pros throwing it in situations where umbrella rigs aren&amp;#39;t allowed&amp;mdash;and with respectable results.

    <title>Two Must-Have Swimbaits</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3880/two-must-have-swimbaits</link>
    <description>

Fact: Noisy baits can be key to fish finding and latching onto your bait, especially in stained water conditions.

While most anglers reach for knocker-packed cranks as go-to search baits in these conditions, don&amp;#39;t overlook the new school of swimbaits with giant paddletails that displace a lot of water and radiate far-reaching low frequencies.

Physics tell us that the lower the frequency, the longer the waveform and the farther the sound travels before losing energy. And, like a thumping subwoofer speaker, typically the larger the resonating body, the lower the pitch.

Thus, thick-bodied swimbaits with large tails create lower-pitched sounds that reach fish farther away, making it easier for them to hone in on your bait.

Two baits that take advantage of these physical laws are Evolve Baits&amp;#39; Darkstar Swimbait and Jackall&amp;#39;s Ammonite Shad, both of which have thick, meaty bodies (with recessed hook-keeper grooves) and exaggerated paddletails that produce a big thump.

Both baits can be fished weedless on an EWG hook, on a jig head or as a trailer on a swim jig or spinnerbait&amp;mdash;not to mention that when fished on an A-rig, the sonic property is multiplied, giving anglers an even greater advantage.

Bass pro Clark Reehm demonstrates several rigging methods.

    <title>Fishing For Gargantuan Gar</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3878/fishing-for-gargantuan-gar</link>
    <description>

The behemoth alligator gar in this cool video definitely back up the claim that &amp;quot;Everything&amp;#39;s bigger in Texas.&amp;quot; Just take it from the guy in this flick whose personal best was every bit of six feet, seven inches! Or check out this brute!

Sure, sturgeon, paddlefish, blue cats and flatheads are impressive, but we&amp;#39;re thinking alligator gar are next on our bucket list. Gotta love their intimidating dentistry, ability to breathe air, and medieval-tough scales.

Their mythology is pretty interesting, too. Over the years the fish has been nearly demonized through tales of supposed attacks, even angler disappearances. But in actuality alligator gar are pretty docile creatures.

Still, they present excellent sportfish potential&amp;mdash;and thanks to the world-class team of fisheries scientists at Texas Fish and Wildlife, the fantastic fish are being studied and managed so more anglers can experience their awesome power firsthand.

                                    Watch
Also known as the uni-to-uni knot, the double uni is a favorite with guides and pros alike for joining fluoro- or mono-leader material to superlines. It&#39;s super strong, easy to tie, and makes a slim, low-profile knot that easily slides through eyelets, even newer micro-guides. Definitely a must-know knot!

                                    Wow
                                       First thing you want to do is fast-forward to the 6:28 mark of this video. Following that you&#39;ll get the excitement of what happens when you accidentally hook into a giant cat during a bass tournament! Watch as these collegiate anglers scramble to boat the nearly 50-pound monster!

                                    Win
 Most of us have a lucky fishing t-shirt. Well, think about retiring the old and styling something new&amp;mdash;for free! Now until September 15th, 2013, buy any five Rapala lures and you&#39;ll get a brand new favorite fishing t-shirt! Seems like a good excuse to go tackle shopping!

                                                        Now that you&#39;ve mastered the double uni, learn more!

                                   Want to increase your hookup percentages? Us too.

If you&#39;re a fan of swimbaits, you might want to check out this video featuring big-bass brain Mike Long, a guy who&#39;s caught hundreds of 10-plus-pound fish, even a donkey over 20!

One of his secrets? Cutting off the standard hooks that comes on most swimbaits. His theory is that a standard single-barbed hook can actually work against you, creating a lever that can unbuckle bass&amp;mdash;especially big ones.

Mike&#39;s tackle tweak is simple and cheap&amp;mdash;and involves little more than wire cutters, a couple 40-pound split rings, an 80-pound swivel, some thin wire and your favorite treble.

But take Mike&#39;s advice and build a bunch of the hook keepers. If you fish as aggressively as we bet you do, you&#39;ll need a pile of &#39;em!

                                                        Mike Long shares some of his big bass secrets.

                                   There is no better time for trophy pike than early spring. But depending on where you call home, early spring is a term used loosely.

This video is a bit longer than most we typically share, but it&#39;s so jammed-pack full of action and great pike-catching tips, we had to get it in front of you! Don&#39;t forget to minimize the window when the boss is out-and-about.

Right now on legendary Lake of the Woods, some of the finest toothy-critter fishing of the year can be had. Give this game a try and we promise you&#39;ll be hooked&amp;mdash;pun intended.

Long time NAF friend and big-fish stallion, Jon Thelen of Lindy Tackle shares some of his insight on what it takes to boat some these giant jackfish!

The best part is you don&#39;t have to cast giant baits and battle sore shoulders all day to make this happen. In fact, you can hook up a lively sucker beneath a Thill Big Fish Slider, sit back and wait for the fight to come to you!

                                                        Book your LOTW pike showdown now!

                                   When bass pros are discussing productive spring-fishing tactics you can plan on hearing about sightfishing regularly. So what is it really? Gerald &quot;G-Man&quot; Swindle is a Jedi Master and explains.

It&#39;s really quite simple. Anglers look for giant bedded female bass&amp;mdash;or even smaller buck bass guarding the bed or fry&amp;mdash;and they try to visually entice bites by watching the bass&#39; reaction to their presentation. Small baits with subtle angler-imparted action seem to be most productive!

G explains the ideal conditions when looking for these big defensive fish, and where and what to cast. He even acknowledges that it may take numerous casts to the same fish before a response is given. Take a few minutes and earn your Jedi stripes listening to one of the best in the game.

He also talks about one of the most important factors&amp;mdash;placing the bait way beyond where the fish is actually sitting.

This tactic can&#39;t be effectively executed without the right goggles. You just can&#39;t beat a quality pair of polarized glasses. Get some and start looking.

Check out this 14-pound Lake Fork sightfishing behemouth. Seems this visual approach can be just the ticket for spawn and postspawn bucketmouths anywhere clear-water can be found.

                                                        A great tactic that will help you catch more big bass!

    <title>Night Fishing Must Have</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3866/night-fishing-must-have</link>
    <description>

If you&amp;#39;re like us, you&amp;#39;ve got an office drawer (or drawers) of reel parts, mystery AC adapters, and broken headlamps. Seems we go through the latter like underwear. And therein lies a good lesson. Instead of buying cheap, disposable non-LED headlamps before each fishing trip, a guy outta just buy a good headlamp from the get go.

Like this rugged new headlamp, built with six 5mm LED bulbs that put out red, green, blue light, and a 130-lumen center LED for white light, making it the ideal solution for just about any nocturnal activity&amp;mdash;fishing or hunting.

Red is great for hunting nightcrawlers or close-up work like knot tying. Green is said to cut down on fish and game taking notice, and blue&amp;mdash;a color often used in forensics&amp;mdash;is the choice for following blood trails.

The run-time is very impressive, all from three AAA batteries.

Face it&amp;mdash;night fishing without a good headlamp is an exercise in frustration.

&amp;nbsp;
Go full spectrum for the summer night bite!

    <title>Fishing For Trashellunge?</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3863/fishing-for-trashellunge</link>
    <description>

Although he comes off as part Steve Irwin (R.I.P.), part Jeremy Wade in this video, our buddy Bruce Condello is no professional actor. In real life, he&amp;#39;s actually the brains behind BigBluegill.com, the net&amp;#39;s best source for giant panfish info. A fisheries expert and savvy multi-species angler, Bruce is a frequent contributor to North American Fisherman and Pond Boss Magazine.

He&amp;#39;s also an active angling steward, a guy dedicated to helping keep our country&amp;#39;s waters fit for fishing. And it&amp;#39;s evident from his latest video, what he describes as &amp;quot;Trashellunge Quest 2013.&amp;quot;

He&amp;#39;s calling on others to do the same. In fact, Bruce has gone on record that BigBluegill.com will donate two dollars to the NEFGA for each photo posted to the Nebraska Fish and Game Association site that shows a full bag of trash collected from Nebraska fishing areas. And, if the bags are official Recycled Fish bags, they&amp;#39;ll double the donation!

Why not follow Bruce&amp;#39;s lead and organize your own local quest for Trashellunge? It could easily prevent the accidental mangling of a child by the ruthless beast.

&amp;nbsp;
Here&amp;#39;s a great place to start your clean-up efforts!

    <title>3 Weedless Bass Wonders</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3858/3-weedless-bass-wonders</link>
    <description>

Long before frogs and soft plastics took over the salad scene, every good angler had at least a couple weedless spoons in his box. And what worked for grandpa 50 years ago still does some serious damage today when big bass belly into the junk.

&amp;nbsp;

Old School Rocks
We always loved how we could rifle these baits to the farthest shore and pull &amp;#39;em back junk free. Available in 1/8- to 1 1/8-ounce sizes, there&amp;#39;s a profile for every situation. Dress &amp;#39;em up with your favorite soft plastic, or go old school with pork rind. They&amp;#39;re deadly on pike, redfish&amp;mdash;heck, just about anything that swims.

&amp;nbsp;

Photo Realistic
Especially for clear-water fisheries, visually matching forage can definitely increase hookups. These weedless wonders come in nine ultra-realistic &amp;quot;holographic&amp;quot; finishes created from actual forage photos&amp;mdash;from gizzard shad to bullfrog. Available in &amp;frac12;- or &amp;frac34;-ounce, these spoons also feature a Mustad Ultra-Point hook.

&amp;nbsp;

Captain Mike&amp;#39;s
Although designed for ripping across weed-mottled redfish flats, sure looks like some crossover potential here. From the slow-sinking willow design of the ADL Weedless Spoon to the compact nickel-plated brass Classic Weedless Spoon with reflective scale patterns, we&amp;#39;re thinking bass and pike oughta clobber &amp;#39;em, too.

&amp;nbsp;
Spoon-feed some summer bass!

We&amp;#39;ve never seen anything like these cool waders, which employ a unique reflective camouflage system to minimize spooking fish, called &amp;quot;EcoWear.&amp;quot; But seems the new techy breathables are only available in Europe&amp;mdash;but you can order &amp;#39;em here. And check out the cool fishing jacket made out of the same material.

&amp;nbsp;

Wow
We&amp;#39;re huge fans of catching giant fish from small boats&amp;mdash;like this massive goliath grouper pulled from a Florida bridge piling on a hand line by an angler in a 12-foot Hobie kayak. The guys from &amp;quot;Chew On This&amp;quot; TV say it&amp;#39;s one of the biggest fish ever caught from a &amp;#39;yak.

&amp;nbsp;

Win
Enter and you could win an epic 4-day fishing trip to the Bair&amp;#39;s Lodge in the Bahamas. Known as the &amp;quot;Bonefish Capital of the World,&amp;quot; you and a guest will get three days on the aqua-blue flats of South Andros. You&amp;#39;ll also score some sweet Mountain Khakis wear and lots of other sweet gear. Valued at over $13,000!

&amp;nbsp;
Score the fishing trip of a lifetime!

    <title>Sexy 4.9-Ounce Baitcaster</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3856/sexy-49-ounce-baitcaster</link>
    <description>

Over the past several years there&amp;#39;s been a space-race to build the lightest baitcaster.

Case in point, in 2011 Quantum launched the 5.7-ounce EXO and Abu Garcia emerged with the 5.4-ounce REVO MGX. Engineers from each company each cut weight with different design approaches, but at the end of the day Abu won &amp;quot;Best Of&amp;quot; at 2013 ICAST.

And now, less than two years later, Abu&amp;#39;s back with a reel that&amp;#39;s even lighter&amp;mdash;as in under five ounces.

Called the Revo MGXtreme, it&amp;#39;s a fitter version of the MGX and then some. With the addition of two additional CeramiLite ceramic spool bearings, we&amp;#39;re told the new reel is a real problem-solver for guys who want to throw flyweight baits a football field.

And the look? Hot!

    <title>Three Super-Cool Buzzbaits</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3855/three-super-cool-buzzbaits</link>
    <description>

Buzzbaits are one heck of a great way to draw bass out of shallow cover, resulting in powerful surface strikes. Here&amp;#39;s three that deserve some serious deck time.

&amp;nbsp;

Dual Prop
This new double salad chopper from Indiana-based Red Dirt Bait Company features titanium wire for reduced weight and rugged performance, and it comes in a host of colors to match any situation. Even cooler, each blade has a small float behind it, which means you can adjust your retrieve without the bait sinking into the junk.

&amp;nbsp;

Sebile Buzz
Designed by legendary bait guru Patrick Sebile, the Proppler Buzz is part topwater frog, part buzzbait. Instead of a traditional blade, the bait features a conical floating hard plastic prop arm with glass rattles that makes a ton of noise and keeps the bait afloat, allowing for stops and twitches in the retrieve.

&amp;nbsp;

Secret Weapon
New for 2013 is Secret Weapon&amp;#39;s Twin-Spin option for their BuzzRbait, which gives you two side-by-side spinner blades behind the buzz prop to mimic busting minnows. Their split ring system allows for easy mods, like choosing different size blades for various actions and sounds. Check out their red craw pattern. Very cool.

    <title>Sissy Fishing For Big Bass</title>

    <description>

Veteran professional bass angler Gary Klein has been around the biggest game in bass fishing for many years and he has seen all kinds of &amp;quot;bigger and better mousetraps&amp;quot; come and go. Some are gimmicks, he&amp;#39;ll tell you, while others are classics in the making.

When the bite is tough and during spring, summer and fall he resorts to a small, finesse presentation. So small that many other anglers actually laughed at him when he debuted it in the mid 80s. This presentation won Klein lots of money, including wins at places like Lake Lanier in Georgia, Bull Shoals in Arkansas, the US Open on Lake Mead in Nevada, and countless other bodies of water.

The rig is simple: 6-pound Berkley Fluorocarbon, a 4- to 6-inch straighttail earth-tone worm partnered with a 3/16-ounce nose weight and a lightweight worm hook to match. It&amp;#39;s small, but dynamite on big bass!

    <title>Must-Have Bass Cranks Up Close</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3843/must-have-bass-cranks-up-close</link>
    <description>

Ask any crankbait ninja what separates good baits from awesome baits and chances are they&amp;#39;ll mention cranks that &amp;#39;hunt.&amp;#39;

See, it all comes down to physics. Like how and where a crank is ballasted with weight, leading some anglers to experiment with weight dots like these to turn conventional cranks into hunters.

But at the end of the day, it&amp;#39;s lip design that most affects how a crankbait behaves.

Hence the Scatter Rap, aptly named for its zig-zagging, hunting and deflective action, which mimics the flight response of wounded or spooked baitfish.

Comprised of the Scatter Rap Crank, Scatter Rap Shad, Scatter Rap Minnow and Scatter Rap Countdown, the family is united by a unique lip design that&amp;#39;s drastically different than common round- and square-bill designs&amp;mdash;all of which hunt.

So is the hunt for hunting crankbaits over? Maybe. Get an up-close look at the baits, and you decide.

&amp;nbsp;
Put your order in and start hunting!

Fact: Seattle rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis&amp;#39; tune &amp;quot;Thrift Shop&amp;quot; video has been viewed over 250 million times on YouTube.

Doesn&amp;#39;t ring a bell? No worries, we&amp;#39;ve all been on the water too long. And some of us are getting so long in the tooth that we use expressions like &amp;quot;long in the tooth.&amp;quot;

Seriously, it&amp;#39;s hard to keep up with all the greasy kid stuff.

But we can appreciate this fishing spoof of the Billboard buster.

Called &amp;quot;Pro Shop,&amp;quot; here&amp;#39;s four minutes of solid gold, created by Fantasy Fishing Insider&amp;#39;s Greg Huff, Bass Utopia&amp;#39;s Jason Holmer and East Coast fishing rapper Mike Morazzini.

Tweaked, rewritten and remixed by the creative crew, the end result is 100-percent fish-head, stuff that&amp;#39;s sure to hit home with bassers across the globe with a real earworm of a chorus that chants &amp;quot;I&amp;#39;m gonna catch some bass | Trying to get 20 pounds in my livewell | I&amp;#39;m hunting, looking for a kicker | This is flippin&amp;#39; awesome.&amp;quot;

And not only are they having fun, they&amp;#39;re trying to get the music rights to sell downloads of the song to help St. Jude Children&amp;#39;s Research Hospital. Wanna help? Simply retweet the following message to help raise awareness.

RT to help @BassUtopia &amp;amp; @FantasyFishinIn get @macklemore @RyanLewis OK for Thrift Shop parody to raise $ for @StJude #SayYes4theKids

Our hats are off to you guys. Keep up the good work!

&amp;nbsp;
More fishing-inspired hip-hop!

Let&amp;#39;s face it, if you forget Mother&amp;#39;s Day, somebody will never ever forget about it. Mom.

That said, be a hero this year with something all women love, second only to shoes and spa retreats. Sunglasses.

And since only the very best is good enough for our ladies, consider giving her what a lot of us wear, as well as legions of pros and guides.

With frames like the vintage Hollywood look of the Isabela or Islamorada, the cool curves of the Inlet, the relaxed style of the Las Olas, or sexy Maya, she&amp;#39;ll think you took a class in what&amp;#39;s hip. Seriously, she&amp;#39;ll be impressed.

Of course, there&amp;#39;s a hidden agenda.

Right after explaining the benefits of UV protection and how polarized glasses work, encourage her to get on the boat with you Sunday afternoon and scan the shallows for fish&amp;mdash;maybe even take a few casts.

That&amp;#39;s definitely one way to get in some fishing on Mother&amp;#39;s Day. And you might just discover a new favorite co-angler!

&amp;#39;Course, you may need a new pair, too.

Order today to get &amp;#39;em by Mother&amp;#39;s Day!

It&amp;#39;s been a while since anybody&amp;#39;s really tickled our ribs with a fishing commercial. Historically, there are a lot of golden oldies to compete with&amp;mdash;like this hilarious Rapala spot. Or this gem from Nitro Boats. Can&amp;#39;t say we blame that guy for hitting the eject button.

It&amp;#39;s pretty hilarious how they&amp;#39;ve animated the likenesses of our buddies Bill Dance and Jimmy Houston (and some bass) to create these funny shorts. The audio? Taken from classic Bill and Jimmy TV outtakes. The result? Pure fun!

Just check out this sing-a-long with Bill. Or these &amp;quot;life lessons&amp;quot; with Jimmy Houston, where the TV legend discusses kissing bass (and girls) with a little league angler!

Good clean fun for the entire family. Gotta love it!

&amp;nbsp;
Tune in for more Yum hilarity!

    <title>New Baits That Change Color</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3833/new-baits-that-change-color</link>
    <description>

To be honest, the first thing that came to mind when we saw these baits was color-changing t-shirts from the early 1990s, a brief fashion fad that had us laughing at kids running around in a contour map of their sweaty regions. Not smart.

Fast-forward over two decades and a similar technology is now available in both hard- and softbaits, something the creators are calling &amp;quot;smart&amp;quot;.

These new baits imitate the visual physiological changes in live, bleeding forage as they move through variable water temps. Like changing from chartreuse to blood red&amp;mdash;and vice versa&amp;mdash;as the baits are worked from warm to cooler waters.

The new technology is available in a bunch of different hardbait choices, from 1.57-inch minis to deep divers, rattlebaits and jerkbaits.

Fans of creatures, craws, worms and other soft plastics need not despair. They offer color-changing patterns in these baits, too, including watermelon and clear to junebug and blood red.

Smart? Just maybe.

Win
Minn Kota has sweetened the pot for anglers thinking about buying a new trolling motor or shallow water anchor. As in money back&amp;mdash;up to $100&amp;mdash;in the form of a Visa prepaid card. But the promotion ends on May 1, 2013. Act fast to get in on the super savings.

&amp;nbsp;

Watch
We&amp;#39;ve seen a lot of &amp;quot;extreme&amp;quot; angling from kayaks&amp;mdash;from muskies to barramundi&amp;mdash;but here&amp;#39;s a new one on us. Try deep-water jigging for big yellowfin tuna in the Gulf of Mexico! Watch as Mustad&amp;#39;s &amp;quot;Dr. Fish&amp;quot; fights the fish from a kayak and later, in the water!

&amp;nbsp;

Wow
So, the fact that the hardwater season is over&amp;mdash;doesn&amp;#39;t make this clip from &amp;quot;North American Fisherman-TV&amp;quot; host Eric Haataja any less impressive. If anything, this giant gives us all something to shoot for next year! What makes it even more impressive is it was caught on a small inland lake, not Eric&amp;#39;s usual big water stomping grounds!

&amp;nbsp;
Don&amp;#39;t miss out on this fantastic Minn Kota promo!

    <title>Learn The Jika Rig</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3830/learn-the-jika-rig</link>
    <description>

We know more than a few smart bassers who keep an eye on what&amp;#39;s happening in Japan. Each year more Japanese baits and techniques are coming stateside, which is good because they work!

Although this rig isn&amp;#39;t brand new, it&amp;#39;s still under the radar of most anglers. Called the Jika Rig, it&amp;#39;s part drop-shot, part Texas-rig, a versatile technique for finesse and power applications&amp;mdash;from dragging the bottom to punching heavy cover. Simply switch out the weight shape or size depending on the depth, cover or bottom composition.

While the Jika Rig is perfect for fishing craws and creatures, it&amp;#39;s also a great way to fish swimbaits, since it naturally orients the bait horizontally&amp;mdash;like real forage.

Although there are pre-packaged Jika Rigs on the market like the Owner JigRig, this video shows you how to assemble it with the stuff you probably already have in your tackle box.

Get out there and give the Jika Rig a shot&amp;mdash;you won&amp;#39;t be disappointed.

    <title>Epic Fish Landing Fail</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3828/epic-fish-landing-fail</link>
    <description>

Fish long enough and chances are good you&amp;#39;ll have a memory of &amp;quot;the one that got away.&amp;quot;

The list of reasons why big fish escape is long: bad knot, nick in the line, fish jumped and threw the lure, buddy failed with the net, etc. But have you ever had a fish-of-a-lifetime in your grasp&amp;mdash;literally in your hands&amp;mdash;and then lost it?

We can only imagine the frustration felt by this shore angler. He was SO CLOSE!

By our estimation, the net-less angler did everything right. The reason for the great escape is his buddies failed to come to his aid. If someone had grabbed him by the waist or leg, they might have won the tug-of-war with the monster cat.

Here&amp;#39;s hoping your spring is filled with &amp;quot;grande mas&amp;quot; memories, without the &amp;quot;escapes.&amp;quot;

&amp;nbsp;
This will help you land more fish and avoid the drink!

    <title>Super Strange Leech-Like Bait</title>

Thought we should let you in on one of the coolest off-the-radar baits we&amp;#39;ve discovered this year.

Called the VibraGRUB, this soft plastic looks part grub, part leech, and is designed to undulate, giving the illusion that the bait is propelling itself underwater. See for yourself. Pretty cool, huh?

Gotta love the bait&amp;#39;s versatility, too. You can fish it on a jig head, as a trailer, weedless, drop-shot, Texas-rigged, Carolina-rigged&amp;mdash;even on an A-rig. Seems a lot of guys are partial to the finesse applications of the new 2-inch version for cold-water situations! Rig on a small darter jig head or split shot rig for loads of fun!

The bait is currently available in 2-, 3- and 4-inch sizes, and six colors.

&amp;nbsp;
Try it on cold-water bass!

    <title>New Weedless Topwater Is All The Buzz</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3820/new-weedless-topwater-is-all-the-buzz</link>
    <description>

Used to be that everyone had a Jitterbug and Hula Popper in the tackle box. Smart sticks still do! Bass pro Tim Horton, knows that classic baits are still the winning ticket, especially on small waters.

Along those lines, Jitterbug maker Arbogast (as in Fred Arbogast for those of us getting long in the tooth) has a new bait out that may just be another classic in the making.

Called the Buzz Plug, it&amp;#39;s part topwater plug, part buzzbait. When cranked in with a steady buzzbait retrieve it moves from side-to-side. Pause the bait and its nose rises out of the water, dropping the tail-end double hook for solid hook-sets.

Plus, the upturned double hook design makes the bait nearly weedless so you can twitch it to your heart&amp;#39;s content, even over grass and gnarly cover.

&amp;nbsp;
Gear up for topwater action this summer!

    <title>Best Panfish Gear?</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3816/best-panfish-gear</link>
    <description>

Meatless
Wanna put together a fish fry in record time? Try mimicking the microorganisms panfish eat. Crappies, &amp;#39;gills and trout all prefer a recently hatched mayfly, just like this awesome bait. And their dynamic tails quiver with the simplest of action, seducing even the tightest-lipped pans with the long-lasting PowerBait formula. Available in 1/32-, 1/64- and 1/80-ounce sizes.

&amp;nbsp;

Stiff Butts
It&amp;#39;s important to have a stiff rod butt to swing in big panfish. This rod series comprises models from 5- to 11-feet for just about any panfish application. From shooting docks to dapping &amp;#39;gills and papermouths in the pads, they&amp;#39;re some pretty cool sticks.

&amp;nbsp;

The Right Reel
Not long ago inexpensive spinning reels were real gear crunchers. Not any more. This top performer features lightweight aluminum and graphite construction and has a sealed drag system for years of use and abuse. The 1325X is perfect for fishing panfish with 2-, 4- or 6-pound test. The price tag? Under $80. Sweet!

Check out these cool antique minnow traps, some going back to the late 1800s. Take a fascinating glimpse into angling&amp;#39;s past and borrow a few ideas for DIY projects that&amp;#39;ll fill your bait bucket!

Seriously, if you&amp;#39;re not familiar with how to make your own traps, you should be. From simple plastic liter bottle designs to more rugged cage traps like this cloverleaf, there are tons of low-cost ways to trap your own minnows and save a few bucks.

Get really serious (as in applying for a commercial bait license) and K-Traps may be just the thing for you.

A glutton for fun? Get a buddy and learn to seine.

Check your local laws before setting any traps! And even if you do start trapping your own minnows, please continue to support your local bait and tackle dealer.

We&amp;#39;ve all been there. You bend over the boat gunnel to lip a bruiser and your smartphone drops into the drink, destined for ol&amp;#39; Davy Jones&amp;#39; locker. We&amp;#39;ll spare you the expletives. And, if you&amp;#39;re like us, you keep invaluable fishing logs and photos on the device. Some stuff just ain&amp;#39;t replaceable.

Guess that&amp;#39;s why we&amp;#39;re excited about what may be the best case ever built. It&amp;#39;s water-, dirt-, snow- and shock-proof&amp;mdash;possibly even idiot-proof.

And not only that, when housed in the easy to spot LifeJacket it actually floats! Plus, you can actually make use of your phone&amp;#39;s photo and video features under water. Just take a look at this cool subsurface footage of a gorgeous brown trout release!

The cool factor doesn&amp;#39;t end there. Add these waterproof earbuds and you can rock out while submerged!

With two different families of boats comprising a total of seven models&amp;mdash;from the RA1652H Apache to the RT188 Tournament Series&amp;mdash;there&amp;#39;s something for everyone&amp;mdash;river rats, waterfowlers and crappie guys, these rigs have all the bells and whistles. And man, they are sweet!

&amp;nbsp;

Predator
The Lund 2010 Predator is the &amp;quot;tin&amp;quot; ride of Canadian bass phenom Jeff &amp;quot;Gussy&amp;quot; Gustafson who drove 30 hours from Ontario to Okeechobee last spring to place in the top 20 during his very first FLW tournament. <title>Must-Have Spawn Maps </title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3809/must-have-spawn-maps</link>
    <description>

In many places across the country gamefish are protected during the spawn. Still, knowing the approximate dates for this annual romance in the shallows can give you an upper hand once the season does open. Catch-and-release is especially vital during this time of the year.

So what&amp;#39;s the best way to tell when the crappies, bass and walleyes will be spawning in your area? We suggest perusing these awesome spawn maps courtesy of the North American Fishing Club.

Created by Mississippi State University fisheries biologist, and regular NAF contributor Hal Schramm, these maps give some general nationwide spawning dates for crappies, largemouth bass, smallmouths and walleyes, based on decades of data.

Still, the best anglers are the observant ones. Keep an eye on your local weather and water temps to fully dial in the annual event.

    <title>Coolest Baitcaster Tweak</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3808/coolest-baitcaster-tweak</link>
    <description>

First time we ever saw these bad boys was on Great Lakes pro-basser Joe Balog&amp;#39;s baitcasters. Then, at the recent 2013 Bassmaster Classic we lost count of the competitors who were rocking &amp;#39;em on their reels in the sub-freezing temps.

We&amp;#39;re talking about the coolest (and least expensive) aftermarket baitcaster tweak we&amp;#39;ve ever seen.

Available in colors to match just about any stick, jersey and boat on the water, they not only look cool, they&amp;#39;ll also up your hookset percentage.

How&amp;#39;s that? By giving you a better grip on any baitcaster, spinning reel&amp;mdash;even ice fishing reels.

Plus, 2013 Bassmaster Classic competitors Ott DeFoe, Matt Herren, Terry Scroggins and others recently proved they&amp;#39;re just the thing to make crankin&amp;#39; in cold weather a whole lot easier, especially in gloves!

And did we mention they look cool?

    <title>Spring Crankbait Color Secrets</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3805/spring-crankbait-color-secrets</link>
    <description>

Once you have the right crankbait action dialed in for your spring water temp&amp;mdash;typically tighter for colder water, wider wobble as it warms&amp;mdash;color&amp;#39;s next.

So what colors are best for springtime bassin&amp;#39;?

Bass pro John Crews says it really depends on water clarity. If there&amp;#39;s been a lot of run-off and the water is stained to full-on chocolate milk, go for reds, chartreuse, green&amp;mdash;anything bright to increase visibility.

Elite series pro Matt Herren says, &amp;quot;I always start my spring crankbait routine off with bright red craw patterns.&amp;quot;

Ott DeFoe reveals that he&amp;#39;s a big fan of the same color in a brand new family of baits from Rapala.

Plus, don&amp;#39;t be afraid of the same shapes and wacky colors used by sauger anglers. If the water&amp;#39;s cold, a lot of times psychedelic jerkbaits with knockers are just the thing to grab the attention of big early-season bass!

So here&amp;#39;s the best way to stay a step ahead of Mother Nature and catch more fish for about the price of a dozen &amp;#39;crawlers.

This handy new app is designed specifically for hardcore anglers, we like that our exact location always comes up on the first screen, no screwing around with menus.

From there you get wind conditions, visibility, cloud cover, tides and more&amp;mdash;but also hourly barometric pressure updates and real-time weather radar. Plus the 72-hour, 7-day and solunar forecasts.

It&amp;#39;s all that and a bag of chips&amp;mdash;and you can save photos and spots in &amp;quot;My Locations&amp;quot; and the app will automatically sync to your free account at the ScoutLook web site. That means even if your phone goes in the drink, your log&amp;#39;s backed up.

Best $3.99 we&amp;#39;ve spent in a long time.

Seems every year more tackle companies are using the Bassmaster Classic as the place to introduce baits. And this year was no different.

In 2012 our buddy Skeet Reese and Berkley Havoc introduced the Sick Fish, which he called a &amp;quot;scooby snack for bass.&amp;quot; Seems he&amp;#39;s back with a smaller rendition. Behold the three-inch Sick Fish Jr.

But that&amp;#39;s not all from the West Coast bass whiz. Check out the Papa Pit Boss and a new worm called the Federale that promises greater hook-up ratios with its unique egg sac design.

Ike&amp;#39;s going smaller also. The Devil Spear is now available in a 3.5-inch &amp;quot;Jr.&amp;quot; version that we cannot wait to punch through the salad.

But our favorite? The Havoc Beat Shad, the 4-inch grub meets swimbait&amp;mdash;a jack-of-all-trades that is beyond appealing. Our guess is it&amp;#39;ll score big with river walleye heads, too, for it&amp;#39;s ringworm meets paddletail potential.

    <title>Hush-Hush Bait Is Jack-Of-All-Trades</title>

Not long ago, one of our river guide buddies called us up in typical &amp;quot;hush-hush&amp;quot; fashion and said these new baits were consistently outperforming anything in his cold-water bass arsenal.

Looks to us like a blade bait made babies with a big soft plastic. The brainchild of a Wisconsin-based father and son, their goal was to create a bait that caught &amp;quot;any fish, anywhere.&amp;quot;

Aptly named the Echotail, the baits vibrate like a tuning fork but also displace a ton of water thanks to the grub tail. Available in sizes and colors suitable for everything from panfish to muskies and briny beasts, the baits feature five pulling holes, allowing anglers easy, on-the-fly action tweaks.

Hard not to like a bait that wears this many hats. You can cast it, troll it, jig it, work it like a crank&amp;mdash;or just deadstick it in the current.

That alone is worth the price of admission in our book!

    <title>Epic Urban Fishing In D.C.?</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3797/epic-urban-fishing-in-dc</link>
    <description>

The fishheads in this awesome video make a good point. Instead of daydreaming of exotic angling destinations we should be spending more time exploring (and taking care of) the fisheries in our own backyards. As one angler succinctly puts it: &amp;quot;It&amp;#39;s about fishing where you are.&amp;quot;

In this case, we&amp;#39;re talking about the Potomac River, a waterway with profound colonial history that most now associate with environmental challenges, not epic 60-70 fish days.

Sure, most urban fisheries do face some significant challenges like pollution, overfishing and invasive species, but we anglers have the power to raise awareness of these issues and usher in restorative efforts.

Now get out in your own backyard and fish&amp;mdash;whether it&amp;#39;s in urban, suburban or rural America&amp;mdash;and think about ways you can help make a difference.

Ever fished with a Perfect 10? Us either. But 2013 Bassmaster Classic angler Jason Christie has!

Just released at the Classic, the new Perfect 10 Rogue gets down deeper (up to 10 feet or more) and faster and stays horizontal thanks to a new internal weighting system. Add a tungsten rattle for lots of thump, a new lip design, fantastic colors and semi-transparent scaled finish, and guys are saying it&#39;s even deadlier than ever.

And with the help of top Smithwick pros&amp;mdash;some of the biggest bass brains in the game&amp;mdash;the new Rogue is available in eight new color patterns to match forage and conditions across the country.

The price? Try under seven bucks&amp;mdash;A huge relief, &#39;cause we&#39;re gonna need at least a dozen.

    <title>Bass Elite Pro Sleeps In His Truck</title>
    <link>http://fishininformer.com/archive/articletype/articleview/articleid/3793/bass-elite-pro-sleeps-in-his-truck</link>
    <description>

It&amp;#39;s really hard not to love a Bassmaster Elite pro who says he&amp;#39;d still sleep in the back of his truck even if he won the $500,000 Bassmaster Classic.

Shows you what 25-year-old Brandon Palaniuk from Rathrum, Idaho, is all about. He&amp;#39;s a go-getter who keeps it real remembering his roots by fishing for bass where trout and salmon reign supreme&amp;mdash;and being willing to log countless windshield hours to compete with bass fishing&amp;#39;s best.

And he&amp;#39;s living his dream. About this time last year he won the Bassmaster Elite Series TroKar Quest on Bull Shoals with Rapala DT 16s&amp;mdash;Ike&amp;#39;s Ink series, no less&amp;mdash;that he borrowed from Mike Iaconelli himself.

So, it comes as little surprise that the kid is growing a huge fan base, including us. Whether you want to call it a Cinderella or Horatio Alger story, we love the fact that it wasn&amp;#39;t too long ago BP was hustling to make a name for himself.

And although his recent three-day bag of 51-8 was eclipsed by Cliff Pace&amp;#39;s 54-12, we&amp;#39;re sure the 2013 Bassmaster Classic second place finisher will continue fill bags and climb the leaderboard.

And we&amp;#39;ll be cheering him on.
