98-Pound Record From A Kayak

Kayaks are lightweight, relatively inexpensive and can get anglers into the shallow backwaters other boats can't reach. It's no wonder so many fishermen have embraced the exciting sport of kayak fishing. Imagine, though, catching a heavyweight world-record from one of these paddle craft.

That's exactly what Aussie Denis Harrold did while slow-trolling a Squidgy Slick Rig (a down-under version of a soft swimbait) on Lake Monduran in Queensland, Australia. The fish—a monster barramundi—tipped the scales at 44.6 kilograms (98.33 pounds) and measured 135 centimeters (53.15 inches), with a hefty 107-centimeter (42-inch) girth.

Besides being excellent table fare, barramundi are unique in that they start life as a male, then change into a female at about 4 years of age.

Though not yet officially recognized by the International Game Fish Association, Harrold's monster barramundi outweighed the current world record by more than 15 pounds.

They love the new Knot Wars app for their iPhones, iPods and iPads. In just two months since it rolled out, it cracked the Top 5 downloads among all paid iPhone Sports apps.

The app is based on the incredibly popular Knot Wars segment as seen on "North American Fisherman-TV" on the Versus Network. During the show, Steve Pennaz tests various fishing knots in head-to-head battles until one champion emerges. Now, the handy smartphone app puts detailed tying instructions for dozens of the strongest fishing knots right in the palm of your hand. Use it on the water, or as you practice your wraps at the kitchen table.

Imagine ... with the Knot Wars app, you'll never again lose a fish because of a poorly tied knot.

Gear For Your Girl

It's easy to tell when a fishing manufacturer aims its new rod, reel or tackle box at the female fisherman. Typically, it's colored pink. Hot pink, pastel pink, medium pink—it's the latest trend. And a lot of the gear is good stuff, too, but that doesn't mean all high-performance equipment for women has to be in that feminine hue. Check out this serious gear for your significant angler.

Lighter Than Air
Get her a G. Loomis ultra-light trout and panfish spinning rod and watch her interest in fishing blossom. Their lengths and weights are manageable, and they'll handle everything from trout to light-duty bass fishing. Just remember to keep your dirty paws off. Better still, get one for yourself, too.

High-Tech Ain't Just "Guy" Tech
Abu Garcia's Soron SX spinning reel matches up well with the trout and panfish stick, but it's no lightweight where it counts. Heavy-duty brass gears provide smooth retrieves and the carbon matrix drag is ultra smooth.

Full Petal Jacket
Nothing cuts a fishing trip short faster than getting cold and wet. Cabela's Dry-Plus Alatna Parka will keep her comfortable on the water. Plus, it's cut and styled for the female form so she won't struggle casting while swimming around in one of your old rain jackets.

How To Fizz A Fish Successfully

The beautiful bass you just took off a 35-foot rockpile is floating belly-up. Now what? You know the problem. Its distended gut tells you the swim bladder is expanded, which keeps the fish from diving to bottom. You also know the solution—fizzing. But frankly, jamming a hollow, 18-gauge needle into a fish's vitals isn't exactly in your comfort zone.

Watch this 7-minute video, produced by Texas Wildlife & Parks fisheries biologists, though, and the mystery will dissolve like lake mist under a rising sun. The term for this condition is: barotrauma, and it happens when bladder gas expands as a fish is reeled from deep water to the surface. Reversing the condition is easy, if you know the steps, and it's a skill every angler should master.

As a bonus, there's a section that'll take you back to your high school biology room's dissection table. But if you're squeamish, you can close your eyes for that part.

Valentine's Day Comeback

It's Valentine's Day, knucklehead! You spent the weekend at the boat show—and you forgot? Okay, we're going to save your butt. Follow this advice and we guarantee she won't throw you back.

Cook With Booze
Women will tell you there's nothing sexier than a man who can cook. Prepare this fantastic salmon recipe and she'll volunteer dessert. All you need is butter, bourbon, maple syrup and salmon. Same menu as your last fishin' trip, huh? Wait, no bacon?

A Full Stringer!
Buy and print certificates for movie theaters, spas, retail outlets, wine clubs, etc. It'll be like coming home with a full stringer of fish!

Not In My House
You left a huge mess the last time you cleaned fish in the kitchen. So, after dinner let her relax while you clean up.

3 Fishin' Trip Must Haves

It's late February and colder than a brass suppository. Everywhere, fishing opportunities are limited. Football's over. You've cleaned your reels, spooled new line, organized tackle and set yourself up for spring. Now what?

Plan your next big fishing trip! While most guides, outfitters and trip planners offer "what-to-bring" checklists on their websites, we've pulled together some must-haves for a successful, hassle-free trip. Whether you're headed to Mexico for monster bass, Alaska for salmon and halibut, or anywhere in between, these items will come in handy.

The biggest names in music rely on SKB roadcases to protect high-buck guitars and stage gear. So, when we learned about the SKB rod transport system (seven rods up to 7-foot, 2-inches), we were psyched! ATA-approved for headache-free air travel! You can nap en route knowing your rods are safe! Unconditional lifetime warranty!

Back From The Dead: 3 Killer Bass Lures

You find that one bait that's got the perfect action, color, profile, whatever—and what usually happens? It gets discontinued before you have time to buy a case of 'em, and you're forced to scrounge close-out bins and garage sales.

Second chances are more scarce than an honest angler, but if you're a fan of the old 1-ounce Cordell Super Spot, the biggest Pop-R ever made or the deep-diving Model A, say a prayer of thanks. The companies that made these iconic baits have breathed new life into them, at least for a short time, and they're available online right now.

The big Spot was the original single-rattle lipless crank, while the huge Model 9A dives faster than just about anything else you can throw. And the big P70 Pop-R? None other than Zell Rowland himself made that lure a go-to bait for anglers all over the country.

For $10 each, you can stop scrounging and go fishing.

Rocket Science = More Fish

The guys with pocket protectors seem pretty darned convinced that rocket science is gonna put more fish in your boat. While working overtime in the Spiderwire lab they successfully combined high-density fluoropolymer strands with "The World's Strongest Fiber," Dyneema. The result? Fishermen now have a sinking braid that is super sensitive, ultra-abrasion resistant, strong as steel, and resistant to UV light, heat and cold.

While monofilament and standard non-sinking braids are versatile, they aren't perfect for every application. When the bait needs to sink fast and sensitivity is key, Spiderwire's new UltraCast FluoroBraid is the bomb.

From droppin' frogs into slop holes to drop-shot applications and jiggin' redfish on sand flats, pro bass and inshore anglers are raving about the line's benefits! Just ask pro Mike Iaconelli.

So, the next time you reach for that under $10 spool of mono, pony up the extra cash for a revolutionary new braid. Superlines may cost twice as much, but the benefits are many.

Get a rebate and free hat!

Warning! What you are about to see is the work of professionals trained in hand-to-hand combat with goliath grouper... Enter Capt. Ben Chancey's Chew On This Charters...

A giant goliath grouper sends Capt. Bo Johnson airborne, and then, swimming. Fortunately his red bikini-clad fishing partner yanks him back into the boat to resume the battle... Does he land the leviathan on his handline? Was the whole event staged? You be the judge..

Another "Chew on This" video pits Capt. Ben Chancey against a 600-pound goliath grouper. It appears the monster fish may win as it snaps Chancey's rod just above the reel and chaos ensues...

Ever worn a nut cup to fish? Well, after viewing this video of muscle-man/actor Hal Kreitman battling another Charlotte Harbor goliath grouper, you just might... And get out the Preparation H...

One Angler's Fight Against Idiocy

Fishermen are typically an agreeable lot. And that's the problem. It takes a lot to get their blood boiling. Fishing writer Robert Montgomery is the exception. Over the years he's seen too much idiotic legislation, like that which recently closed 12% of Southern California's best sportfishing waters, and heard too many whackos whining about the "evils of angling."

Montgomery thinks it's time to step up and defend our right to fish and access public waters. His website www.activistangler.com keeps tabs on government intrusion, environmental extremists, loss of access, invasive species (i.e. Asian carp, northern snakehead, etc.), pollution and other threats.

Every Fisherman Deserves A Throne

If a fisherman's castle is his cabin on the lake, what's his throne? Well, here's a chair that deserves consideration ... along with a couple tackle storage options for your royal review.

            Angler's Throne
Talk about the perfect chair for a fisherman—this one comes built into a handy tackle backpack! How many times have you hiked along a river and wished for a spot to sit? Never again. Only thing we'd change is the name; "Rock River Backpack Fishing Chair" is practical, but "Angler's Throne" sounds cooler.

            Angler's Pack
Angler's Pack is the real name of this soft-sided backpack tackle box. Comes with four plastic tackle boxes, a built-in rod holder and a separate storage section at the top for reels, clothes, food, etc. It's nearly bullet-proof, though hopefully you won't need to test that feature.

             Angler's Stroller
OK, so it's a stretch to call the Pelican Ultimate Travel Case a "stroller," but look at it this way: It's got wheels, and it carries your most precious possessions—reels, lures and line, of course. This thing is heavy duty; tote your most valuable gear in here and rest easy.

The Ultimate Travel Case ain't cheap,
                        but it's rock solid.

Most Disturbing Fishing Tip

We're fairly sure you've watched at least one video clip where an angler explains how to pop a buried fish hook out of human flesh. BUT—have you ever seen one that shows how the hook got there in the first place? We thought not. Go ahead and keep one eye closed while you watch this video.

Renowned Mexico Bass Outfitter, and Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Famer, Billy Chapman Jr. is founder of the legendary Anglers Inn International. One of Anglers Inn's gems is Lake El Salto, a world-class destination for HUGE bass, and where 50- to 100-fish days are common. During 30 years of running the camp, he's learned a great many tricks, and it's quite obvious that he's dedicated to passing along all manner of vital information that will help other anglers get out of a tight spot.

However, we DON'T recommend practicing this particular technique the way Billy does.

Learn this slick trick from a Hall-of-Famer.
